The Château Ramezay has played an influential role in Montreal’s history since its first construction in 1705. It has been successively Governor’s Residence, head office of the Compagnie des Indes occidentales, campaign headquarters of the Continental Army(when Benjamin Franklin visited), Montreal Courthouse, university lecture rooms and finally, a historic and cultural site.
As one of Montreal’s architectural landmarks, the Château Ramezay features in 1,001 Historic Sites You Must See Before You Die. It has a collection of more than 36,000 artefacts and welcomes 50,000 visitors every year. The Museum offers educational activities which have delighted over 100,000 children in the past 15 years. This must-see attraction highlights Montreal’s charm to visitors and locals alike.
The Museum is funded by donations from generous citizens who believe in the importance of preserving this Museum and historic site. The Château Ramezay also relies on funding generated by day-to-day activities and business donations. All donors receive an annual newsletter detailing achievements made thanks to their generosity.
